| In 1989, Konami decided it might be a good idea to try putting their classic vampire hunting series, Castlevania, onto a portable console. And that same year The Castlevania Adventure was released for the classic Game Boy. Would this be a smart move, or one of the blunders of the series? Read on for my review. PROS: -FOR AN OLD-SCHOOL GAME BOY GAME, THESE GRAPHICS AREN'T HALF BAD. Some of the enemies and the backgrounds, especially the exploding eyeball enemies, have a fair amount of detail. -THE FIRST STAGE MUSIC IS ONE OF THE COOLEST SONGS IN VIDEO GAME HISTORY! This song is, without question, the best piece of music to ever emerge from the Castlevania series. CONS: -YOUR CHARACTER IS RIDICULOUSLY SLOW! When it comes to both walking and climbing ropes (you climb ropes in this game, not stairs), your character takes his sweet time. You may be able to see the opposite part of the screen pretty well, but it's gonna take you a while to get there! -THERE ARE NO SECONDARY WEAPONS! These were one of the best part of the Castlevania series - why in the hell would they not include them in this game!? That's got to be one of the biggest mistakes this series ever made. -PLATFORM JUMPING IS HORRENDOUS. To successfully make a jump, you must be at the very edge of the platform, and jump at just the right moment. And wouldn't fate have it that you'll often find yourself doing a ton of jumps right in a row? -NO WAY TO SAVE YOUR PROGRESS. Other Castlevania games usually offered the gamer a way to continue - usually a password, sometimes a battery - but that doesn't happen here! This hurts the replay value badly. -YOU LOSE YOUR WHIP UPGRADES WHEN ENEMIES HIT YOU! In this game you start with a standard whip, but can upgrade to a chain whip, and finally to a whip that shoots fireballs. But if an enemy touches you, your whip degrades one level. This is just plain stupid. -ENEMIES BLEND IN WITH THE SCENERY. Because the enemies can blend in with their environments, it is sometimes difficult to spot them - and they can often end up having the last laugh. -IT'S THE WORST GAME IN THE ENTIRE CASTLEVANIA SERIES. I LOVE this series, as you can easily tell in my other reviews, but this game is garbage. OVERALL: There are not enough bad things that can be said about this game. If you want a good portable Castlevania game, they're all good - with the exception of this lone blunder. Don't even bother with this one - it isn't worth your time or your hard-earned cash. |
