I am old enough to remember this game when it first came out, and when I heard it would be released on the GameBoy Advance I was very excited. Thankfully it is as much fun today as it was then and is still arguably the best 2-D platform game ever. Nintendo has refined Mario to a science and this game represents the pinnacle of the 2-D versions. With seven areas to explore and 96 goals to find you'll be running, jumping, and flying for hours.
For those of you who have not played the Super Nintendo version, in SMW Mario, Luigi, and the Princess decide to take a vaction from the troubles of the Mushroom Kingdom in Dinosaur Land. When they get there they learn from a friendly dinosaur, Yoshi, that Bowser has trapped his friends and taken over the island. On top of this the Princess has disappeared. So Mario and Luigi set off to find the Princess, save the Yoshi's, and stop Bowser.
Mario has many power-ups at his disposal including the usual mushrooms, fire flowers, and a new feather which gives Mario the ability to fly with a cape. This game was also the debut of Yoshi, Mario's dinosaur buddy, and this adds a new dimension to the gameplay. Since Yoshi can swallow enemies with his tongue some areas become much easier with his aid. Not included in the original but added for the GBA is the ability to play as Luigi. Luigi can jump higher and fly farther than his brother and is more suited for some levels. Its up to you to choose which plumber is best for you.
The gameplay is divided between the seven different areas of Dinosaur Land. Within each area are many individual side-scrolling levels to complete. You advance through the game by completing one level to get to another. There are also shortcuts to be found by discovering the hidden goals of many levels. The world map screen is where you choose the level you want to attempt, and all levels except for castles can be replayed infinitly. The castles are where you fight each areas guardian before moving on to the next area. The original Mario Bros. arcade game is also included. You can play solo or against a friend in battle mode. It's not much, but it does add a little extra something in terms of replay value.
Super Mario World is a classic that has stood the test of time. It's simple enough for anyone to enjoy but deep enough with it's replay value for seasoned vet's to appreciate. It's pure fun and thats what video games should be. A must own for the GameBoy Advance.
User rating: 4The classic returns!
In 2002, Nintendo rereleased the Super Nintendo classic, Super Mario World. As an added bonus, the game had a special mini-game based on the original Mario Bros. How would this rerelease measure up compared to modern games? Read on and find out.

Graphics: 4/5
The GBA uses a far greater variety of colors than the GBC ever could, greatly benefiting the overall quality of the graphics. Unfortunately, the small GBA screen doesn't give you as much room to move around as a TV does. Sure, the graphics aren't as good as most GBA games, but they're good enough.

Play Control: 3.5/5
Using one button to do a spin jump and the other to do a regular jump is just plain weird at first, but you get used to it quickly. It also takes a little getting used to flying with the Cape (it's quite a bit different from the Feather in the last game on the NES.)

Challenge: 3/5
This game isn't very hard. You can go the shortest way through the game and have it beaten in nearly fifteen minutes. But, you miss out if you don't go the long way and experience all the good stuff. This game is actually EASIER than the original SNES version because the game saves EVERYTHING.

Theme/Fun: 3.5/5
Even over a decade after its release, this game is STILL a classic. It's no wonder Nintendo rereleased it on the Game Boy Advance. The Mario Bros. mini-game only adds to the appeal. For those of you who don't know, this game marked the first appearance of Yoshi, who has now grown to become an all-important Nintendo character. Alternate paths and tons of levels make this one of the best video games of all time.

Storyline: 3.5/5
Simple and to the point. During the group's vacation to Dinosaur World, Bowser kidnaps the Princess again. Obviously, all Mario games revolve around the simplistic yet fun gameplay, NOT the story. For some odd reason, like in Super Mario 64, the Princess is called both Peach and Toadstool.

Sound/Music: 3.5/5
The music has been remixed for this rerelease, and quite nicely, might I add. It's not as good as the original, but certainly a refreshing change. The sounds aren't bad either.

Originality: 3.75/5
The original Super Mario Bros. invented the side-scrolling platformer, and this game reinvents it.

Overall: 4/5
This was an awesome launch game for the SNES, and it's still going strong on the GBA. It stuck with the tried and true formula of early Mario games, but added just enough innovations to keep things interesting. If you've got an SNES or a GBA, this game is worth owning.

User rating: 5One of the best Mario games of all time
This is the original Super Mario World game from Super NES but now transformed into a Gameboy world. This game is awesome and one of the best in the Mario series (Super Mario Bros. 3 first and tied with Super Mario 64). It's a much better play if you have the Gameboy Player for Gamecube so you can play it on the big screen just like old times but either way, this game will have you playing for hours on end.
The best features about this game are the fact that you can be both Mario and Luigi, have Yoshi (in 5 different colours I might add) and the exclaimation mark stages, the first one (yellow) is the best. This game has so many stages and secrets. The Star World is awesome, especially the Special Stage World, I wish they still made games like this one.
Treading similar waters, this time Mario has a cape and can fly, a lot longer than in Super Mario Bros. 3 where you have the tail and can only fly for a limited time. In this game you can fly over the whole stage...if you want but what would be the point of that? The cape is one of the best items to ever grace the Mario series.
The whole walk through, through Dinosaur Land is awesome, you go through many areas like the Cave and a Forest. I also like the secret level where you can easily go get Yoshi and a couple of mushrooms/flowers or capes...whichever floats your boat. Another great secret is the one stage where you can get 45-50 lives, this should last you the rest of the game. Butter bridge is one of the harder levels, you'll need those lives and where the "cheat" level is located, you should be using them real soon.
In all, this is an amazing game, there isn't much more I have to say, just buy it and you'll understand. An excellent classic and Mario is the best hero ever (well, second to Link). Enjoy.
